TALES OF SIGNA
EMPLOYEE PIONEERS
Johanna Thokoane (Mama Johanna)
Signa’s Housekeeping
What I Do Matters – One Sole, Two Roles
In the heart of Signa Group, there is a person who quietly yet powerfully helps the company run smoothly, ensuring that everyone can focus on their mission without distractions. Meet Johanna Thokoane, affectionately known as “Mama Johanna” to her colleagues.
As a mother and father to her children, she embraces both roles with strength and dedication. Pap (mielie meal), her favourite dish, fuels her energy as she supports her family and colleagues alike.
Since 2014, Johanna’s tasks and role as Housekeeping have gone much deeper. By handling these daily essentials, she allows the rest of the team to focus on their strategic work, ensuring that Signa’s greater purpose of Preparing Africa for a Working Future continues uninterrupted. She plays an integral role in maintaining the company’s productivity and morale, quietly enabling those around her to thrive.
Johanna’s impact doesn’t stop there. She takes great pride in having introduced several people (both disabled and able-bodied) to Signa’s learning and youth programmes, helping them to find their own pathways to success.
Rooted in her Tswana heritage, Johanna upholds values of community, giving, belonging, and respect. “There is an old lady I share my groceries with after shopping,” Johanna shares, reflecting her innate generosity. For Johanna, helping others isn’t just an act – it’s a way of life. When it’s time for a deep spring cleaning, Johanna fills her home with the uplifting sounds of gospel music.
“My life changed completely,” she recalls smiling. Mama Johanna’s most cherished memory at Signa was the day she was hired as a full-time employee. It marked the end of her search for temporary jobs – and the beginning of a stable life where she could truly provide for her children.
In her own quiet and steadfast way, Mama Johanna helps build a future where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
